HENRY PU YI APPOINTED MANCHUKUO RULER - 1932 - 1 Japan dispatches their new Manchukuo ruler Henry Pu Yi to his post while Baron Nobuyoshi Muto, Commander-in-Chief of the Kwantung Army, is seen off to the celebration by Japanese schoolchildren. Muto driver POV nearly running a man down as they hurry to the Palace in Changchun, Manchuria to join the new Emperor Pu Yi and a score of his generals and other high officers.
LYTTON COMMISSION ARRIVES IN MANCHURIA - 1932 The League of Nations sends a commission headed by Earl Victor Bulwer-Lytton to Manchuria to investigate Japan’s invasion of the Chinese region. Representatives from Great Britain, America, France, Germany and Italy are greeted at the train station by Japanese officers. The commission will later anger the Japanese by finding against Japan in the Far East conflict.
JAPAN COMPLETES INVASION OF MANCHURIA - 1932 The Imperial Japanese Army forces complete their military control over South Manchuria as they take Chinchow, Shanhaiguan and Harbin. Chinese troops gather in vain to stop the invasion.
HENRY PU YI APPOINTED MANCHUKUO RULER - 1932 Henry Pu Yi, the ex-emperor of China arrives in Changchun, Manchuria to take up his appointment as regent of the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo. The citizens are not happy with the change as he, his prime minister Chang Hsiao-Hsu and entourage move into the palace.
CHINESE OFFICIALS DESTROY SQUATTER HUTS - 1932 Chinese families stand by helplessly as their squatters’ huts in an unauthorized district of Shanghai are torn down by officials. Many were driven from their homes during the Sino-Japanese war the previous winter and are now homeless yet again, this time at the hands of their own government.
TACHEN ISLANDS EVACUATED - 1955 The U.S. 7th Fleet oversees the evacuation as 14,000 nationalist civilians on the Tachen Islands who are loaded aboard transport ships. As they leave military installations are demolished to minimize the islands’ usefulness to the Communists.
JAPAN VS. CHINA IN FOOTBALL GAME - 1930 East meets east in a San Francisco football game with the Japanese team being defeated by their Chinese counterparts 58 to 14. Football signals definitely look different than those one is used to seeing.
CHICAGO WORLD FAIR EXHIBITION - 1932 AERIALS Gorgeous aerials of the Chicago Exhibition grounds where the 1933 World Fair will be held. Many of the Exhibitions modern and/or futuristic buildings such as the Hall of Science, the Travel and Transportation Unit with it's floating dome, the Adler Planetarium, the Chinese Lama Temple and neo-classic administration building form an incredible lake-front city skyline.
