THE CHINESE RETREAT Chinese civilians, hundreds of thousands of them, plod along choked roads, retreating from the modernly-equipped armies of the Japanese. Absolutely expressionless, they gulp their food, snatch a few winks of sleep, then resume their slow, sad journey toward Tushan and Kweichow.
