AFTERMATH OF GM STRIKERS & POLICE BATTLE Tear gas smoke still drifts through the evening air after police attempt to eject General Motors sit-down strikers at the Flint, Michigan Fisher Body Plant No. 2. The strikers hold their ground in spite of 24 men being injured and a police car lies on its side after the battle is over.
AUTO UNION WORKERS PASS OUT PAMPHLETS Hundreds of United Automobile Workers attempt to bring the Ford Motor Company within union ranks passing out pamphlets to workers as they march on the River Rouge plant in Detroit, Michigan.
NATIONAL GUARD ARRIVE IN YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO National Guard troops arrive in Youngstown, Ohio after the Governor declares martial law during the steel strike. Some of the people greet the guardsmen enthusiastically but the union workers are less than thrilled.
GENERAL MOTORS LABOR STRIKE ENDS A six-week strike that has paralyzed General Motors and kept 135,000 men out of work ends as Michigan Governor Frank Murphy, U.S. Department of Labor's conciliator James F. Dewey and other employers and union representatives sign a settlement that all agree to. Happy workers everywhere leave the plants they've been striking against to celebrate.
GOVERNOR CLOSES JOHNSTOWN STEEL MILL As the strike against Little Steel companies refusing to sign union contracts spreads to Johnstown, Pennsylvania Governor George H. Earle steps in with a heavy hand. He closes the Cambria plant of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation and declares Martial Law despatching state police to oversee the situation.
LITTLE STEEL STRIKE OF 1937 Steel workers in Warren, Ohio take part in the "Little Steel" strike involving several small mills in the Midwest who refuse to sign a union contract. Passenger POVs from a train and an airplane bringing in food and supplies to protestors who refuse to leave the plants. Production continues in some instances but tensions are on the rise.
FUNERAL FOR MEN KILLED IN STRIKE BATTLE Thousands gather in Chicago for the funeral rites of several men killed during a clash between steel mill strikers and police later dubbed the Memorial Day Massacre.
FORD WORKERS ATTEND CIO MEETING Some 15,000 Detroit, Michigan Ford auto plant employees attend a Congress of Industrial Organizations (C.I.O) meeting to plan massive strikes to bring unionization to the industry.
SEAMEN ON STRIKE More than 750 striking seamen parade in the drenching, chilly rain before the pier at which the giant ocean liner Manhattan awaits her sailing. The ship is delayed beyond her scheduled departure by failure to complete a crew.
