A CHANGE OF HEART A man looking for a dance partner tries to get the attention of a fat woman seated in a nightclub. She slaps him. When he explains that he's the best jitterbugger around, they march off to the dance floor.
BERLIN GREETS OLYMPIANS Before the start of the 1936 Olympics, Berliners greet the arriving American team with waves and salutes. Team members, including a blonde woman and a serious looking black woman, exit a bus. WS shows buses rolling near the Brandburg Gate. National flags fly from flagpoles. HITLER WATCHES OWENS SET RECORD Wonderfully crisp footage from Berlin in 1936 shows Jesse Owens before, during and after his gold medal winning sprint in the 100 meter dash. CUs of Owens in starting position and then smiling, breathing hard, after the race. Hitler looks on, not smiling. American fans wave little flags in stadium. WILD JITTERBUGGING CONTEST Gifted young dancers perform amazing feats in a Harlem nightclub. Jitterbug mania. Exuberant fun, skillful, athletic dancing. Intercut with comic shots of an actor who after getting rejected twice, finds a fat woman to dance with him. Comic stereotyping based on weight. They win the jitterbug contest.
DANCING THE BIG APPLE After a bandleader in evening clothes introduces them, young African American dancers leap onto a dance floor and jitterbug their way through the big apple. It's a kind of swinging square dance. Great dancing, excellent swing music.
AFRICAN AMERICAN BEAUTY CONTEST Young African American women dressed in evening gowns pose during a beauty contest held in a nightclub. A band sits behind them. After each one has a closeup, a pompous and verbose MC hands out a trophy.
NOT ENOUGH TROPHIES Two short scenes from a black musical. In a lobby outside nightclub, the club owner tells a beautiful young woman, Come here you gorgeous creature. When she gets close he snatches away a trophy he just awarded her. Then, on the bandstand inside the club, he holds up the trophy and announces it will go to the winner of a new contest, for jitterbugging.
GOING FOR A RIDE, ATLANTIC CITY Three shots taken on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City show African American men pushing white tourists in sea rickshaws. Vacationers mill around. One shot looks out at sea from the Boardwalk.
