LIFE GOES ON IN BERLIN Berliners return to their normal lives after the war. Traveling shots through the city show a man riding on his bicycle, people walking, and a horse drawn carriage driving past destroyed buildings. The footage also includes clips of people pumping water, rebuilding their stores, and digging up ruins. There is also a shot of people waiting outside a theater that is showing the movie Grosse Freiheit, aka Great Freedom No. 7 and Port of Freedom.
GATHERING WOOD Various shots show Berliners in forests chopping, sawing, and gathering firewood. The wood is carried home on wheelbarrows and carts. The clip ends with a woman in her apartment grabbing wood from a stack outside her windowsill and placing them in her stove to boil water. There is a close up of the gas pipes connected to her oven/range.
BERLIN - DEAD CITY The varying conditions of landmarks in Berlin after the Allied bombings. The clip includes shots of Brandenburg Gate and the legendary Adlon Hotel, still largely intact, with Reichstag in ruins.
BERLINERS IN THE STREET WAITING TO DRINK FROM A BARREL Berliners holding bowls and cups gather around in the street, waiting to drink from a barrel. There is a pitiful shot of a woman standing alone at a barrel, running her finger along the opening of the vessel to taste any last drops that remain.
FASHION PARADE Winter fashions from West Berlin feature lots of light wool and furs, and show that veils floaring from evening gowns are back in fashion. The collection emphasizes a long, extended silouette.
