PEACE ARCH CEREMONY BETWEEN U.S. & CANADA At the Canada-U.S. border between Blaine, Washington and Surrey, B.C. friendship between Canada and the United States is renewed in a colorful ceremony of exchanged flags at the Peace Arch on the international boundary.
ARLINGTON MEMORIAL TO WAR NURSES UNVEILED A memorial statue to Army and Navy nurses is unveiled at Arlington National Cemetery. Frances Rich who sculpted the statue and her mother screen and radio star Irene Rich attend the dedication ceremony.
BERLIN OLYMPICS OPENING CEREMONIES One hundred thousand people attend the opening of the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. Hitler is in attendance for the Opening Ceremony. The athletes march into the stadium with their countries' flags. The ceremonial flame is lit with the Olympic torch. Track and Field events begin the Games, including the javelin and different races.

1938 ANSCHLUSS (UNION) OF AUSTRIA & GERMANY German troops sweep into Austria during her March 1938 annexation into Greater Germany by the Nazi regime. Dr. Arthur Seyss-Inquart becomes the new Chancellor of Austria as Kurt von Schuschnigg resigns and is imprisoned in Vienna's Belvedere Castle. The Anschluss (Union) is soon completed and crowds everywhere welcome Hitler and his armies with great enthusiasm.
