1,500 DIE IN MEXICO'S WORST STORM DISASTER A hurricane and floods batter central Mexico, causing havoc from the Pacific coast where numerous ships including an 1,800 ton freighter are swamped to far inland where whole villages are wiped out by earth slides. With the death toll near 1,500 and still mounting, the grim decision is made to abandon the search for bodies, as Mexico concentrates all its resources on relief for the stricken areas. IKE IN TUNISIA AND PARIS President Dwight D. Eisenhower's historic peace mission carries him to Tunisia, the most pro-Western of the Arab nations and the smallest stop on his entire tour. President Bourguiba presents an Arab steed and a cheering populace hails Ike. He travels by sea on the U.S.S Des Moines to the French shores where an enthusiastic reception in Toulon greets him. But in Paris, the character of Ike's mission is altered as he confers in momentous pre-summit talks with Charles De Gaulle, Adenauer and Macmillan that result in an invitation to Nikita Khrushchev for summit meetings in the Big Four capitals. INDO-CHINA CATHOLICS RESCUED Catholics fleeing Red-held territories in Indo-China by the thousands in a desperate raft journey across the Gulf of Tonkin are saved from their precarious half-foundering craft in dramatic scenes. Meanwhile, Red troops fighting below the 18th Parallel when the armistice was signed are repatriated aboard Russian vessels.
POGO PLANE MAKES FIRST LEVEL FLIGHT Another unorthodox Navy fighter, the vertically-rising "pogo plane" makes its first horizontal flight, displaying perfect control in its unique vertical takeoff and landings as well.
AUTOMATED SHIP AMERICAN RACER Arriving in New York Harbor in the fog, the SS American Racer prepares for her maiden voyage to Europe in 1964. The fully automated vessel allows one man to control a master console in the engine room. The automated labor saving devices on the ship cut the number of crew dramatically.
