LABOR STRIKES CONTINUE IN 1946 Telegraph workers in New York City go on strike picketing outside Western Union buildings. In Detroit the labor picture looks brighter Henry Kaiser and his partner J.W. Frazer reach an agreement with union leaders for the manufacture of their new cars at the former Ford Willow Run bomber plant.
TRUMAN HONORS 442ND REGIMENTAL COMBAT UNIT A reception committee turns out to greet the 442nd Regimental (Go for Broke) Combat Team in Washington D.C.. The unit, comprised primarily of Japanese Americans is honored by President Truman himself who then gives a brief speech on the unit's triumphs in WWII.
U.S. BREAKS RELATIONS WITH CUBA Fidel Castro stages a military parade featuring modern weapons from Russia. As a result of Castro's demands to cut personnel at the U.S. Embassy, the U.S. end diplomatic relations. Press Secretary Jim Haggerty says: "There's a limit to what the United States, in self-respect, can endure. That limit has been reached."
RUSSIA & IRAN SPAR AT U.N. MEETING The Iranian-Russian dispute becomes heated during a United Nations Security Council meeting. Russia's Representative Andre Gromyko stalks out in a huff and then Iranian delegate Hussein Ala presents his nation's stand.

MONA LISA LEAVES LOUVRE FOR NATIONAL GALLERY The Mona Lisa leaves the Louvre and sets sail for New York, where the painting is loaded into an air-conditioned truck and transported to the National Gallery. At the unveiling, JFK says: "This painting is the second lady that the people of France has sent to the United States. And though she will not stay with us as long as the Statue of Liberty, our appreciation is equally great."
