 AIRLINE DISASTER AVERTED IN CHICAGO - 1955
Tragedy is averted by the cool head of a pilot who steers an airliner to safety after it skids off the rain-drenched runway at Midway Field in Chicago and plows into a fence. A deep gash in the plane is the only real injury thankfully.

Disaster and sudden death strike Chicago's Midway Airport when a heavily-loaded transport plane making a low-instrument landing in fog hits a neon sign only a few hundred yards from the runway. Rescue workers carry 22 dead and 21 injured from the wreckage of the downed plane.
