ALLIED CHECKPOINT SIGN - BERLIN, GERMANY An American flag waves in the wind over an “Allied Checkpoint” sign with American, Britain and French flags painted below the letters. These checkpoints were part of the Berlin Wall, a 28-year barrier created by Soviet leaders in East Germany and East Berlin to stop people from fleeing communism for the democracy of West Berlin. In 1989 when the borders between East and West Germany opened these checkpoints were abolished.

THE BERLIN AIRLIFT - 1948 As a result of the Soviet blockade of railroads and street access into West Germany, American, British, and French forces airlift supplies to its German allies. Spirit transferred from film to D-5, available in all HD and SD formats.
ARMED GUARDS - BERLIN WALL Two armed guards patrol the east side of the Berlin Wall. One guard peers through a pair of binoculars at the camera while the other guard paces back and forth then stops to look. Guards were posted to shoot anyone trying to escape to West Berlin across the Wall.

THE BERLIN WALL WS low angle of a graffiti-covered section of the Berlin Wall. The Wall was erected in 1961 to stop people fleeing the communist regime of East Germany. It divided the city of Berlin itself and became a symbol of oppression and the Cold War. On November 9, 1989 the borders between East and West Berlin were opened and the Wall came down.
