ALLIED CHECKPOINT SIGN - BERLIN, GERMANY An American flag waves in the wind over an “Allied Checkpoint” sign with American, Britain and French flags painted below the letters. These checkpoints were part of the Berlin Wall, a 28-year barrier created by Soviet leaders in East Germany and East Berlin to stop people from fleeing communism for the democracy of West Berlin. In 1989 when the borders between East and West Germany opened these checkpoints were abolished.

WEST GERMANS PROTEST BERLIN WALL On the anniversary of the Berlin Wall, West Berlin mayor Willy Brandt holds a memorial service for those who died seeking freedom. Demonstrators protest and the Freedom Bell tolls.
BERLIN WALL - CHECKPOINT WARNING SIGN The warning sign posted on the Berlin Wall in front of Brandenburg Gate checkpoint reads "ACHTUNG Sie verlassen jetzt West-Berlin" or "Warning: you are now leaving West Berlin."

BRANDENBURG GATE - BERLIN GERMANY WS of the Brandenburg Gate behind the Berlin Wall. The Gate is Berlin’s most famous landmark and was built in the late 1700s as a symbol of peace. Ironically it was later incorporated into the Berlin Wall as one of its checkpoints. When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 the Gate became a symbol of that reunification.
