THE ROAD TO NEVADA NUCLEAR TEST SITE & YUCCA FLAT - 1950S The Nevada Test Site in Mercury, Nevada is located deep in the desert accessible only through mountain passes. A car driving to the desert site passes Camp Desert Rock where military personell participating in atomic tests are headquartered and passes the sign for Yucca Flat close to the test site and the steel shot tower atop which an atom bomb was detonated.

ATOMIC BLAST DURING OPERATION CUE EXPERIMENT IN NEVADA - MAY 5, 1955 At atomic blast equal to about 30,000 tons of TNT creates the trademark mushroom cloud lighting up the early morning sky on May 5, 1955 during an experiment at the Nevada Test Site titled "Operation Cue." The experiment studied the effects of an atomic blast on various elements in society including power utilities, housing, clothing and equipment.
