POPE CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY AND CORONATION It's a dual celebration for Pope John XXIII as he officiates at solemn rites in St. Peter's marking his 3rd anniversary as Pope and his 80th birthday.
ECUMENICAL COUNCIL REOPENS Carrying on the work of his predecessor, Pope John XXIII, Pope Paul VI reconvenes the Ecumenical Council with new appeals for unity among Christian faiths. Nearly 3,000 Cardinals, Bishops and other Church dignitaries are joined by 52 observer-delegates representing non-Catholic faiths at the opening session. Along with a search for unity the Pope hopes to bring about reforms within the Church itself.
FIRST LEG OF IKE'S PEACE MISSION President Dwight D. Eisenhower begins his epic three continent peace tour in Rome. Pelting rains for most of his stay keep crowds to a minimum but the President's visit has considerable impact. In extended consultations with Premier Segni and other leaders, paying homage at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and in audience with the Pope, the President's intensive agenda of consultation and ceremony sets a pattern for the remainder of his historic trip.
