NICKLAUS WINS MASTERS BY A STROKE The Masters Tournament in Augusta, Ga., totes a bag of thrills for the record crowd as golf's top aces battle right down to the wire. It's the 23-year-old Jack Nicklaus who comes out on top as he comes through the final round with even par and 286 for the tourney. He's one happy fellow as he puts on the winner's jacket.
YANKS WIN WORLD SERIES OPENER At Yankee Stadium, before a crowd of 70,000, Whitey Ford's hurling holds the hopeful Milwaukee Braves to one run, while the timely hitting of Hank Bauer and Gerry Coleman provide the margin of victory for the perennial New Yorkers.
FELLER'S PITCH RACES MOTORCYCLE Cleveland Indians pitching ace Bob Feller throws a baseball faster than a cop driving an eighty-five mile per hour motorcycle in a classic, kitschy test. Feller winds up and releases the ball after the motorcycle has passed him, but the ball is seen breaking paper in the pitching target before the cop reaches it.

POLO GROUNDS CLOSES The Polo Grounds is about to give way to arnhousing development. The Mets play their last game there before moving to a new stadium. Except for a few football games in the fall crowds will no longer pour into the Polo Grounds. Casey Stengel, with his wife waves farewell to the Stadium.
1963 WORLD SERIES OF BASEBALL The Los Angeles Dodgers (ex-Brooklyn bums) give the New York Yankees the bum's rush in the first two games of the World Series. In the first game, left hander, Sandy Koufax sets a Series mark as he strikes out 15 Yankees. With the New Yorkers' vaunted power throttled, the Dodgers go on to down the World Champions 5 to 2. The second day is almost a replay of the first. Again--it's fine Dodger pitching and they, not the Yankees, are again the power at the plate. Before it's over the Dodgers are on top, 4 to 1, and lead the Yankees two games to none as they head for the West Coast.
