CONGO CRISIS OF 1964 The United States, Britain and Belgium mount Operation Dragon Rouge to free hostages in Stanleyville, Republic of Congo from the Simbas. The bodies of Dr. Paul Carlson and Phyllis Rhine are among the Americans killed in the slaughter as the paratroopers arrive. Further deaths were prevented as the troops secured the city and began evacuating loyal natives and European hostages.
VILLAGE THREATENED BY LANDSLIDE A mudslide threatens a small village in the Austrian Alps as a river floods. The townspeople flee while people from neighboring towns donate time and equipment to help divert the river back to its original path away from the village.
