SOCKEYE SALMON RUN IN HELLS GATE CANYON Hells Gate Canyon on the Fraser River is packed with sockeye salmon swimming upstream during their annual spawning run. The Salmon Commission finds it easy pickings to grab and tag the fish to study how many reach the spawning grounds and in what condition.

SMELT FISHING IN NOVA SCOTIA Sprintime smelt fishing in Nova Scotia has evolved into a family tradition as Canadians go fish smelting at sundown during the annual season. Families gather just before sundown with nets to scoop up the fish as they move upstream with the tide. One man describes how to fish for smelt. "You just stick the net in very carefully on the top and go with the water. And you have to go fsst enough that your net don't turn over you see -- no secret at all, it's just patience, just stay up all night."
