NEW TRACK AND FIELD RECORDS Peter Snell of New Zealand sets a U.S. mile mark as he leads Jim Beatty and others home in a run at the Modesto, California meet. Another world record is set as Brian Sternberg soars 16 feet 7 inches in the pole vault. Phil Shinnick set a broad jump record, 24 feet 4 inches only to have it disqualified due to wind velocity.
'CHATEAUGAY' WINS KENTUCKY DERBY Upwards of 100,000 people jam Churchill Downs for the 89th running of the Kentucky Derby. Undefeated "No Robbery" and "Candy Spots" and "Never Bend" are the top three horses, but a 9-1 outsider, "Chateaugay" puts on a stretch run that gives him the "Run For The Roses" in a thrilling finish.
SPORTS POLE VAULT RECORD AT PENN RELAYS The Penn Relays, 69th running, sees a soaring record in the Pole Vault as Brian Sternberg of the University of Washington clears the bar at 16 ft., 5 inches, a world record. The 440-yard relay is copped by Michigan State after they also win the 880-yard. Other events are covered.
RUSSIANS TRY AUTO RACING The Soviets pick up a new sport, auto racing, and these are the first pictures to be seen in the West of their racing cars. The drivers run to the cars at the start of the race which has them driving through a snowstorm.
