U.S. WELCOMES FIRST HUNGARIAN REFUGEES The first 60 of 5,000 Hungarian refugees admitted to the U.S. arrive at McGuire Air Force base in New Jersey. After welcome ceremonies, they're transported to Camp Kilmer, newly converted to a reception center, where hundreds of nearby residents greet them.
PLANE HITS TOWER 4 die, 17 are injured when a private plane hits an 800 foot radio tower in New Jersey and spins down into an apartment house. More than a hundred in the house were menaced by flaming gasoline and flying wreckage.
"BATTLE HYMN" HERO, COL. HESS VISITS KOREAN CHILDREN Air Force Colonel Dean Hess, the famed "Flying Parson" of World War Two andrnKorea, revisits the hundreds of Korean orphans who are now his wards, after his rescue of them from battle zones and founding of an orphanage. DELTA JET CRASHES The R.A.F.'s delta-wing Vulcan bomber crashes in landing, as it completes a 26,000 mile flight, at an average speed of over 500 m.p.h. The loss of the big bomber is a sharp set-back to Britain's air expansion program.
