CHRISTMAS REUNIONS FOR BERLINERS During Christmas, 1963, Communists permit West Berliners to visit relatives in the East for the first time since building The Wall. A sequence of shots shows people lining up outside with snow on the ground, waiting for passes from East German bureaucrats and passing through the border. Numerous shots of emotional Germans having reunions. Relatives run into each others' arms, exhange hugs and kisses.
ALLIED CHECKPOINT SIGN - BERLIN, GERMANY An American flag waves in the wind over an “Allied Checkpoint” sign with American, Britain and French flags painted below the letters. These checkpoints were part of the Berlin Wall, a 28-year barrier created by Soviet leaders in East Germany and East Berlin to stop people from fleeing communism for the democracy of West Berlin. In 1989 when the borders between East and West Germany opened these checkpoints were abolished.

TORCHLIGHT GATHERING HONORS JFK After the assassination, West Berliners hold a memorial in a plaza re-named for JFK. Various shots of attendees bearing burning torches in the night. WS shows crowd and numerous flames. A man attaches flowers to a sign that says, JFK Platz.
BERLINERS ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE OVER WALL Dramatic footage shows Germans leaping to freedom from apartment buildings in the East over The Wall into the West. One mind-blowing shot shows a woman hanging from a second story window of an apartment building. East German police hang onto her arms. A West German man pulls her legs from below. She drops to safety and people cheer. At another building, a man sits on the ledge of an upper floor window. CUs of people gesturing for him to jump. He drops into a safety net held by firemen below. A series of shots show E. German workers at a window facing the border which they seal with bricks and then, WSs of apartment buildings with bricked up walls.
