GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM OPENS The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum designed by Frank Lloyd Wright finally opens to the public in the fall of 1959. Mayor Robert Wagner cuts the ribbon at the opening ceremony and the interior of the building as well as some of its collection is first viewed.

PROCLAMATION OF THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA Kuomintang troops are taken prisoner marking the end of the Chinese Civil War. Weapons are left standing still and the new flag of the People's Republic of China is raised. Mao Zedong shakes hands with people in the crowd and meets with dignitaries. A brief subliminal message shows just a few frames of an atomic bomb mushroom cloud spliced in with the other images.
