1947 GOLD CUP RACE In a gruelling 90-mile race on the choppy waters of Jamaica Bay in New York, Danny Foster of California pilots "Miss Peps V" to victory in the 40th Gold Cup classic. The defending champ, Guy Lombardo, is forced out in the final heat by hull damage and an oil-line break. Foster wins the last heat with a broken propeller blade.
MOTORBOAT SHOW OPENS The National Motorboat Show opens in New York City with plenty of lovely visitors to indicate the fine points of a million dollars plus worth of the newest and fanciest in marine architecture, from outboard cruisers for everyman to luxurious floating palaces.
HYDROPLANES IN GOVERNOR'S CUP REGATTA Hydroplanes in the power unlimited class scorch along the Ohio River at Madison, Indiana, in the Governor's Cup Regatta. The nation's biggest, fastest speedboats and top racing drivers set a thrill-packed pace, with Miss U.S., Fred Alter at the wheel, averaging a torrid 89-plus m.p.h. to cop the coveted trophy.
MANHATTAN MOTORBOAT MARATHON Twice around Manhattan Island is the course for 73 souped-up skimmers in a boat race set against the famous skyline. A spectacular sporting event featuring the George Washington Bridge and the Statue of Liberty.
