STORMS RIP EASTERN U.S. AND JAPAN Hurricane Helene roars along the Carolinas and Virginia Capes, her 140 m.p.h. winds and slashing rains taking a high toll in property damages. But forewarned residents take cover and no life is lost. Central Japan reels under Typhoon Ida, one of the worst storms in the nation's history. Nearly 600 die, thousands are injured or missing, while property damage alone is truly catastrophic in scope.
1,500 DIE IN MEXICO'S WORST STORM DISASTER A hurricane and floods batter central Mexico, causing havoc from the Pacific coast where numerous ships including an 1,800 ton freighter are swamped to far inland where whole villages are wiped out by earth slides. With the death toll near 1,500 and still mounting, the grim decision is made to abandon the search for bodies, as Mexico concentrates all its resources on relief for the stricken areas. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO FROM 1961 A quarter of a century ago from 1961 - A 1936 hurricane caused untold damage along the East Coast as floods in Texas added to the year's damages by nature's fury. The fabulous billionaire, John D. Rockefeller, makes his annual trek South. He was a feeble 97 and this was his last trip. In the pre-jet age they were experimenting with catapult-launched planes to span the Atlantic. Inventors were dreaming too. Here's a foot-propelled plane that zooms down a runway and soars into the air--for one foot.
HURRICANE DOLLY Streets are flooded and palm trees bend in the strong winds of Hurricane Dolly as it hits the coast of Southern Texas. Trees and branches are down in the streets in its aftermath. Awnings have been ripped from the fronts of businesses.
