AMELIA EARHART DISAPPEARS Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan are well into their round-the-world flight when they take off from Lae, New Guinea on 2 July 1937 with the intended destination of Howland Island. The aviators never reach their destination and disappear without a trace to become one of the greatest mysteries of all time. Aerial and ocean searches for the pair yield no results.
