MERGE TO BECOME ONE - 1955 The American Federation of Labor (AFL) and the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) labor unions merge to become the world's largest free labor organization with 16 million members. Delegates hail new leaders President George Meany and Vice-President Walter Reuther while U.S. President Eisenhower praises the merger.
