ALLIED CHECKPOINT SIGN - BERLIN, GERMANY An American flag waves in the wind over an “Allied Checkpoint” sign with American, Britain and French flags painted below the letters. These checkpoints were part of the Berlin Wall, a 28-year barrier created by Soviet leaders in East Germany and East Berlin to stop people from fleeing communism for the democracy of West Berlin.
