GATHERING WOOD Various shots show Berliners in forests chopping, sawing, and gathering firewood. The wood is carried home on wheelbarrows and carts. The clip ends with a woman in her apartment grabbing wood from a stack outside her windowsill and placing them in her stove to boil water. There is a close up of the gas pipes connected to her oven/range.
LIFE GOES ON IN BERLIN Berliners return to their normal lives after the war. Traveling shots through the city show a man riding on his bicycle, people walking, and a horse drawn carriage driving past destroyed buildings. The footage also includes clips of people pumping water, rebuilding their stores, and digging up ruins. There is also a shot of people waiting outside a theater that is showing the movie Grosse Freiheit, aka Great Freedom No. 7 and Port of Freedom.
BERLINERS DRINK BEER In early twentieth century Berlin, Germans drink beer as bands play. Lifting a beer stein, a man blows off foam. A bar maid carries steins in both hands. A fat woman vendor walks through a beer garden. CUs of a man with a tuba and a jovial man raising his arms as he leads a band.
BERLINERS ESCAPE TO WEST Shots of patrolling East German border guards intercut with East Germans running through barbed wire towards freedom. A young woman briefly gets tangled in barbed wire as she flees. Later, looking relieved, she walks with her friends. On an East German watchtower, a very young soldier clutches his rifle. West Berliners carry a man shot while crossing.
MAY DAY DIFFERS BETWEEN EAST & WEST BERLIN West and East Berlin and Moscow all celebrate May Day in vastly different ways. West Berliners and Chancellor Ludwig Erhard call for peace while East Berlin and Moscow display their military might.
BERLINERS FACE SOVIET TANKS Anti-Soviet demonstrators run through the streets of Berlin. Goods shots of Berliners, many with bikes, dashing through a plaza. Agitated citizens throw rocks. Tanks in motion.
