YANKS WIN 1956 WORLD SERIES With the Series tied at 3 games each, the Yanks' Johnny Kucks shuts out Brooklyn, as the New Yorkers' bats slam out four home-runs, including 2 by Berra, and a grand-slammer by Skowron. A decisive ending to a see-saw World Series, as the Yankees score 9 runs, to regain the World Championship of baseball.
WORLD SERIES:DIDGERS BEAT YANKS Behind the sterling pitching of Sal Maglie, the "come-back guy" of baseball, the Brooklyn Dodgers win the first game of the 1956 World Series 6-3. President Eisenhower tosses out the first ball, as 34,400 fans cheer the start of baseball's autumnal classic. It's a battle of home runs, with Hodges' 3-run homer the big blow of the game.
1963 WORLD SERIES OF BASEBALL The Los Angeles Dodgers (ex-Brooklyn bums) give the New York Yankees the bum's rush in the first two games of the World Series. In the first game, left hander, Sandy Koufax sets a Series mark as he strikes out 15 Yankees. With the New Yorkers' vaunted power throttled, the Dodgers go on to down the World Champions 5 to 2. The second day is almost a replay of the first. Again--it's fine Dodger pitching and they, not the Yankees, are again the power at the plate. Before it's over the Dodgers are on top, 4 to 1, and lead the Yankees two games to none as they head for the West Coast.
DODGERS LAST GAME IN BROOKLYN In Brooklyn, a ceremony preceeds the Dodgers' last game of the season and the last ever in Ebbets Field. In the pre-game ceremonies, the National Conference of Christians and Jews honors 3 players including Sandy Koufax.
FIRST WORLD SERIES NO-HITTER In Yankee Stadium, baseball history is made in the 5th game of the World Series as Don Larsen retires 27 batters in succession--not a single Dodger reaches 1st base, as the Yankee hurler achieves the first World Series no-hitter, and the first World Series "perfect game."
