ALLIED CHECKPOINT SIGN - BERLIN, GERMANY An American flag waves in the wind over an “Allied Checkpoint” sign with American, Britain and French flags painted below the letters. These checkpoints were part of the Berlin Wall, a 28-year barrier created by Soviet leaders in East Germany and East Berlin to stop people from fleeing communism for the democracy of West Berlin. In 1989 when the borders between East and West Germany opened these checkpoints were abolished.

ANTI-COMMUNIST RALLIES IN WEST GERMANY - 2 Faces in the crowd listen to rally speakers at anti-communist demonstration in West Germany. In West Berlin, a crowd watches the ceremonial lighting of the torch of freedom. Chancellor Willie Brandt delivers a speech to the crowd and then marches with them in the parade.
ANTI-NAZI RALLY Tens of thousands of young Berliners rally to denounce resurgent Nazism, following a rash of swastika-smearing incidents in Germany and the Western world. Candlelight vigils and parades are featured at the rallies. NOTE: Reporter voice-over requires additional clearances.
ARMED GUARDS - BERLIN WALL Two armed guards patrol the east side of the Berlin Wall. One guard peers through a pair of binoculars at the camera while the other guard paces back and forth then stops to look. Guards were posted to shoot anyone trying to escape to West Berlin across the Wall.
