NATIONAL GUARD ARRIVE IN YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO National Guard troops arrive in Youngstown, Ohio after the Governor declares martial law during the steel strike. Some of the people greet the guardsmen enthusiastically but the union workers are less than thrilled.
LAGOS CRISIS Some ten thousand Nigerian men and women volunteer for the Army after the eastern state, Biafra, declares its independence. The government declared unofficial war, saying Biafra would be "crushed."
GOVERNOR CLOSES JOHNSTOWN STEEL MILL As the strike against Little Steel companies refusing to sign union contracts spreads to Johnstown, Pennsylvania Governor George H. Earle steps in with a heavy hand. He closes the Cambria plant of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation and declares Martial Law despatching state police to oversee the situation.
