GIANT LANTERNS OF ISHIKI - 1932 The villagers of Ishiki, Japan raise giant lanterns thirty feet high to chase away demons that can ruin their crops as part of their celebration of the harvest time. The ritual is so unusual that elsewhere the Japanese call them the "fool lanterns of Ishiki."
