Injured passengers are loaded into ambulances while surviving crew pose together before the Navy and U.S. State Department of Commerce launch an inquiry into the disaster.
ECUMENICAL COUNCIL REOPENS Carrying on the work of his predecessor, Pope John XXIII, Pope Paul VI reconvenes the Ecumenical Council with new appeals for unity among Christian faiths. Nearly 3,000 Cardinals, Bishops and other Church dignitaries are joined by 52 observer-delegates representing non-Catholic faiths at the opening session. Along with a search for unity the Pope hopes to bring about reforms within the Church itself.

FIRE AT MEAT PACKING PLANT - 2006 Firefighters fight a large blaze at a meat packing plant in Toronto thought to have been set by an arsonist. Flames are visible from the roof of the building and hoses of water are used to extinguish the flames.
