CHAMBERLAIN MEETS HITLER British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain exits a British Airways plane and is greeted by dignitaries. A car arrives, its doors opened by two Nazi soldiers; Nazi soldiers stand at attention guarding a long outdoor staircase; Chamberlain, French Prime Minister Edouard Daladier, Hitler and others ascend the stairs. Entering a large room, they confer with high German officials. Chamberlain, Daladier, Mussolini and Hitler are seen signing a document (the dismemberment of Czechoslovakia). Chamberlain and Lord Halifax exit a British Airways airplane.
ROME-BERLIN AXIS The Rome-Berlin Axis and the Anti-Comintern Pact: Adolph Hitler enters an ornate room full of uniformed men, shakes hands with Italian foreign minister Galeazzo Ciano, turns and raises his arm in the Nazi Salute. The other men in the room return this salute; uniformed men wearing the SS insignia observe an event; Hitler and a uniformed officer Galeazzo Ciano sit at a table solemnly examining papers before them.
MUSSOLINI IN ROME In front of the Il Vittoriano monument in Piazza Venezia, a huge crowd stands, some waving their caps in the air on the ends of their rifles. A uniformed Benito Mussolini speaks from his balcony to the cheers of those below.
MOBILIZATION FOR WW I Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia, signaling the beginning of WWI. Teams of horses pulling small wagons, mobilized armies marching and troops entering a train and waving to those left behind.
EUROPEAN STATE GATHERINGS Prior to World War I, formally dressed European heads of state wearing ceremonial military dress with spiked helmets, greet each other. A man salutes, a woman curtsies. Two men wearing pickelhaubes, one plumed, step up into a horse-drawn carriage and are tucked in by liveried attendants. Scene changes, men in military dress or formal civilian dress walk in groups on a tree-lined path.
FORT YORK Musket and cannon drills take place in war re-enactments at Historic Fort York in Toronto. Soldiers dressed in period costumes shoot a cannon.
