SAMUEL INSULL STRIKES INADVERTENT POSE FOR TIME MAGAZINE - 1934 Samuel Insull, utilities millionaire and co-founder of the company that would become General Electric walks down a set of stairs to a waiting car. Insull was charged with securities fraud three times in the mid-1930s. In an attempt to foil the media he strikes a pose that will later end up on a 1934 cover of Time magazine by shielding his face with his hat as he exits his vehicle. Mr. Insull was later acquitted of all charges against him.
SAMUEL INSULL - FORTUNE TURNS Samuel Insull, utilities millionaire and co-founder of the company that would become General Electric talks about the turn his fortune has taken from coming to America with two hundred dollars and an offer for a job to, "Today I haven't that two hundred dollars or a job either." Mr. Insull amassed a fortune in utilities and transportation companies bringing cheap electricity to millions but lost everything in the Depression and was later accused of securities fraud. Insull was cleared of the charges but left America to live in France where he later died of a heart attack penniless.
