JAPANESE ATTACK U.S.S. PANAY IN 1937 The USS Panay was a small river gunboat built to patrol the Yangtze River. The Panay was evacuating American officials and civilians from Nanking when they were attacked by Japanese warplanes on Dec. 11, 1937. Bombs are shown hitting the water around the ship, a gunner fires at the Japanese planes.
