GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM OPENS The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum designed by Frank Lloyd Wright finally opens to the public in the fall of 1959. Mayor Robert Wagner cuts the ribbon at the opening ceremony and the interior of the building as well as some of its collection is first viewed.

SAY NO TO NORAD DEMONSTRATIONS Peace activists stage a demonstration stretching themselves out from the American embassy in Toronto to the Progressive-Conservative Headquarters using ribbons. They protested the plans for Canada to renew the NORAD agreement with the United States wearing signs that say "Say No To NORAD" and "No STAR WARS".
