ECUMENICAL COUNCIL REOPENS Carrying on the work of his predecessor, Pope John XXIII, Pope Paul VI reconvenes the Ecumenical Council with new appeals for unity among Christian faiths. Nearly 3,000 Cardinals, Bishops and other Church dignitaries are joined by 52 observer-delegates representing non-Catholic faiths at the opening session. Along with a search for unity the Pope hopes to bring about reforms within the Church itself.
