SOVIET OBSERVATION CRAFT LANDS ON THE MOON The Soviets finally achieve a soft landing on the moon by an observation craft after at least four previous failures. Their Lunar IX sends back pictures that are received in England before the Russians make an official comment. The pictures show the moon's surface to be soft and spongy - ideal for landing a manned spacecraft.
