Kennedy begins his venture into personal diplomacy in South America in Puerto Rico, where he is greeted by huge throngs before leaving for Caracas, Venezuela, his first stop in South America. The President's trip was planned to further the Alliance for Progress, a plan for the economic betterment of Latin American nations. Mrs. Jackie Kennedy surprises the throng in Caracas by speaking to them in Spanish. The Presidential party then goes or to Bogota, Colombia, where he ends his tour with an appeal to Latin America to remember that a democratic government can further economic progress without the repression of liberties.
