MISS WORLD CONTEST 1961 The "Miss World" contest in London features beauties from 36 nations who parade their charms for the judges, including Bob Hope. Rosemarie Frankland of the United Kingdom took home the crown.
PAINTING DRAWS RECORD CROWD AT MUSEUM The Metropolitan Museum of Art plays host to a record-breaking crowd of 82,000 as their latest acquisition, a Rembrandt, goes on exhibition. Bought for a record 2,300,000, it is the latest "must see" attraction in New York.
"FLOWER DRUM SONG" IN GALA PREMIERES The motion picture version of the smash Broadway musical opens in New York City at the famed Music Hall to critical acclaim. There's also a benefit performance in San Francisco where some of the picture was made.
NEHRU TOURS DISNEYLAND The Prime Minister of India sets off on a ten-day tour of the country after his series of conferences with the President. One of his first stops is Disneyland in California where Walt Disney plays host on the eve of Mr. Nehru's 72nd birthday.
EXHIBITION OF SCANDINAVIAN DESIGNS Two men are followed by a group costumed as Vikings at a Canadian exhibition of Scandinavian design, crafts and furniture featuring Dansk products and Scandinavian artisans. Paintings and glassware are on display.
NEW GERMAN U-BOAT FLEET LAUNCHED The first German submarine to be built since that nation went down to defeat in 1945 is launched at the Kiel shipyards. The new subs are designed for operation in the Baltic area--this time, however, they'll prowl in the defense of democracy.
U.S. DEFIES EAST GERMAN BORDER GUARDS Served with an order by East German authorities that all U.S. personnel must show identification before entering that sector of Berlin, American troops answer with the only language the Reds seem to understand--a show of arms. American soldiers escort civilian cars across the border under heavy guard and defy the East Germans to demand identification cards. Meanwhile, the U.S. Berlin Garrison holds elaborate maneuvers in the shadow of the wall erected two months ago. It's a morale booster for the citizens of West Berlin.
NEHRU AND KENNEDY MEET One of the most important foreign leaders to make a visit to the United States, Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru is greeted by President Kennedy at Quonset Point, R.I., before they plunge into a series of talks that will include most of the problems facing the world today.
